This summer we tried our hand at container gardening. The kids have planted tomatoes, herb and even a pumpkin in pots at the campground. The “Xlux Soil Moisture Sensor” helps us know when our plants need more or less watering.
The Xlux meter is designed to test the moisture levels in your soil. It is not intended to be used to test water or hard dry soil, doing so will damage the probe.
The meter has a large, easy to read dial with 10 scales to measure the levels.
- 1-3: Wet
- 4-7: Moist
- 8-10: Wet
The meter requires no batteries, which is very convenient. The meter measures approximately 10.25 inches from tip to tip. The probe measures 7 inches.
The Xlux sensor has basic instructions printed on the back or the meter and the box.
- Insert the probe of the meter 3 to 4 inches into the soil
- Read the moisture level indicated on the meter.
- Water accordingly.
- Remove the probe from the soil and wipe clean after each use.
Initially I was receiving strange result, but discovered I had no inserted the probe deep enough into the soil. It is important to place it 3-4 inches down to receive accurate results.
I knew our pumpkin was in desperate need of water after being neglected for a few days. Our initial reading read as expected: Dry. My daughter started to water the plant and we began to see the meter move.
After several trips to refill our small water bucket we were able to get the meter to read wet.
Over the summer we had been struggling with keeping the pumpkin watered enough. When we assumed we had watered the plant enough it was only registering a 4 on the meter. The “Xlux soil moisture sensor” let us know that we needed to water the pumpkin more than we were doing.
The box references measuring PH levels but I haven’t found any indication that there is a way to do that with this meter. The Xlux company sells other meters that do test PH, water and light levels for a slightly higher price.
The Xlux soil moisture sensor works well and is easy to use. It helps the user quickly determine the moisture level of the soil and take corrective action.
