If You Were Me And Lived In…China

My children love exploring different cultures. Today they were excited about the dragon her music class was creating to celebrate the Chinese New Year. “If You Were Me And Lived In…China” is a great way to introduce your little one to the Chinese culture just in time for the Chinese New Year.

“If You Were Me And Lived In…China” is another installment in the “If You Were Me And Lived In…” series of books by Carole P Roman. This book is a gentle introduction to the mysterious land of China.

It follows a similar pattern to the other books in the series. My children learned what their names might be if they lived in China. In this book, we learned how to say “I love you, Mommy”  and the word for “Daddy”.  The author challenges the reader to say “I love you, Daddy” and my children quickly took up the challenge!

Throughout the book are illustrations that help your child visualize the Chinese culture. I love that there is a crisp “real-life” image of the Great Wall of China. It helped my children see how magnificent this structure truly is.

The book demonstrates how similar and diverse our cultures are. My children made the connection between the dancers preforming the lion dance, to the dancers we witnessed at the Diversity celebration in our hometown. They also noticed how we also celebrate with Fireworks on special occasions, but the meaning behind them is different.

The author has included a pronunciation guide in the book. I love that it included in the text, this makes it easier for young readers to sound out difficult words. There is also a guide at the back of the book for reference.

“If You Were Me And Lived In…China” is a gentle introduction to the Chinese culture. It has taught my child that we can be thousands of miles apart and life at first glance seems strange and scary, we can look past our differences to discover how similar we really are.
