My children are learning to read. It’s been quite and adventure. Memorizing sight words and sounding out others can be a challenge. I can’t remember a time where I wasn’t able to read, so I forgot about the struggles that go with it. It wasn’t until I tried to help my daughter read her French books that it all came rushing back to me and I found myself breaking down the simplest words trying to sound them out.
“Cave Kiddos: A Sunny Day” by Eric Jay Cash is a unique story that will have you and your children acting like caveman as you explore how to read and say the word “Water”.
This book was unexpected and a whole lot of fun. My first impression of the book was that it is just a a silly story about 4 little cavemen until I realized it was so much more! The book encourages children to discover how to sound words out through repetition and breaking them down into smaller, easier to handle parts. The authors own children are both delayed speakers which helped inspire the creation of this book.
“Cave Kiddos: A Sunny Day” may not appeal to every reader. There is no complex story line, it’s simple and straight forward with very few words. My kids loved repeating “wa” and “ter” with me as we pretended to be cave kiddos with the children in the story as the book recommended. I hope that the author, Eric Jay Cash, write more books similar to this using other sounds such as “TH” or “R” sounds. The repetition that comes with the story is perfect for helping your little one learn and practice sounds.
The illustrations are fun. They are simple without a lot of background distractions. The font is large and easily read by even the youngest child.
“Cave Kiddos: A Sunny Day” is a unique story that will help teach your little one how to sound out words in a way that will have you both giggling and having fun at the same time.
