This was an extremely busy summer, filled with several opportunities to meet up with old friends and make some new ones. As my kids grow, friendships become more and more important to them. Each friendship has it’s ups and downs. It’s important for my kids to know what a good friend is, how to be a good friend and most importantly what the bible says about friends.
“Brave Girls Faithful Friends” from the Tommy Nelson’s Brave Girls Series, is a 90 Day Devotional for girls that features The Brave Girls – Hope, Glory, Faith, Gracie and Honor. These girls know how to make and keep friends. Together the girls have experienced the ups and downs of friendship and want to share their experiences with your little one.
My daughter and I are working our way through each devotion. The book is broken down into sections, each one covering important information on friendship. Each devotional follows the same pattern. It has a title, day, relevant scripture, the devotion and a prayer pointer.
The book is aimed at girls between the ages of 7 and 10. My daughter is almost 6 which is a little under the suggested age, while she enjoyed the devotionals she wished that there were more pictures in the book. The cover is really bright and colourful and we both expected to find some more illustrations of the girls throughout the book.
I love that the very first devotional covers the topic of your very best friend. It focuses on the fact that Jesus is the very best friend that you could ever have. The very first paragraph of the book asks your daughter to imagine what her best friend in the whole wide world would be like. It was really incredible to hear all the things my daughter thought would make a best friend.
“Brave Girls Faithful Friends” is a great resource for girls on how to become a great friend. Another great section is Friendship Starters. With the school year just about to start this section is filled with some ideas that your daughter can use to make new friends at school and other activities.
I love that this book focuses on a “Brave Girl” theme and not just being a princess. I’m glad to see a shift in girls books and activities that give them the knowledge and power to be more than just a pretty face.
Each devotion in “Brave Girls Faithful Friends” starts with a scripture verse. While many of the verses are easily understood, they have chosen a few that aren’t as easily understood. Day 58 uses Psalm 23: 5 as it’s scripture, “You prepare a meal for me in front of my enemies. You pour oil on my head. You give me more than I can hold.” When my daughter and I read this together she got caught up on why would oil was poured on someones head. The reference was completely lost on her (and me) until we looked it up. The devotion itself turned out to be one of our favourites.
“Brave Girls Faithful Friends” is a devotional that your daughter can read on her own or with you. It has been a wonderful way for my daughter and I to end a busy day. I cherish these moments with my daughter. Too soon she is going to be 13 and not wanting to spend time with me, so I will take the opportunity now to help her learn the importance of friendship.
