Every day it is a challenge to get my children to eat healthier options. They will eat some healthy foods, but I can’t help feeling a little bit jealous when I watch other children chowing down on fresh strawberries or peaches. Sometimes it seems like it would just be easier to give into their desire for french fries and chicken fingers every night rather than go through the grumbling and complaining that accompanies many of our other supper choices.
“Who’s The New Kid” by Heidi Bond tells the story of Breanna Bond, who at just nine years old weighed 186 pounds. Her mom faced the daunting challenge of making some lifestyle changes for her daughter that would ultimately affect her entire family. The book brings awareness about childhood obesity and it’s effects on our children.
Breanna’s pediatrician wasn’t concerned as the weight kept creeping up, insisting that it was “normal”, her mom on the other hand was becoming increasingly alarmed as she saw her daughter become inactive and withdrawn. At first Heidi tried to make the weight loss battle her daughter’s battle. It wasn’t until Heidi realized that it was a family concern that things really started to change for Breanna and her family.
The success that the Bond family shares about their weight loss journey brings hope to anyone (child or adult) that by a pair of tennis shoes and motivation you can make the changes you need to be healthy and happy. The book doesn’t offer a “magical solution” but focuses on real life, every day actions that you can implement as a family to all become healthier. No special equipment needed or food. A simple pair of running shoes and food you can find on the shelf at every supermarket. It does require dedication and stepping out of your comfort zone to get active.
In the back of the book you will find a guideline for an exercise program. It is pretty open for you to choose the activities of your choice. There is a chart in the back for you to plan your activities.
There is also a section for recipes. Many of the recipes are healthy versions of every day things I personally like to eat. There is nothing that is crazy difficult to create. Teriyaki Chicken, Make-Your-Own Tacos and even Cheeseburgers are just a few of the recipes you’ll find. I love that there is something for everyone’s taste and you don’t feel like you are being deprived of any of your favourite things!
The last section of the book is a section of favourite bible verses to keep you motivated on your weight loss journey. Without God nothing is possible and keeping your mind focused on him gives you the strength to complete your journey with grace and thanksgiving.
